Some or my favorites in 2005...
Restaurant:
Los Olivos
I've been eating at Los Olivos for more than just this year, but lately it has definately been my favorite. They have 2 locations, one in Old Town Scottsdale, the other in North Scottsdale. There is never a wait at the North Scottsdale location, even on weekends, and their mariachi is actually amazing. Order the Los Olivos Special, a delicious plate of fat...2 sour cream and cheese enchiladas, rice and beans. They also have a great margarita and their chips and salsa also comes with a bowl of refried beans.
Movie:
Crash
In all of the movies I saw in 2005, no movie got to me the way Crash did. It's a movie about racism in Los Angeles. I know that sounds almost cliche, but this one's different:
"A Brentwood housewife and her D.A. husband. A Persian store owner. Two police detectives who are also lovers. An African-American television director and his wife. A Mexican locksmith. Two car-jackers. A rookie cop. A middle-aged Korean couple. They all live in Los Angeles. And during the next 36 hours, they will all collide."
This movie is about racism, but more than that, it is about the propensity we all have to do unbelievably horrible things, as well as incredibly wonderful things. Scenes from this movie still haunt me. The acting and writing are amazing. I can't beleive this movie did not recieve more credit than it did. Don't miss it, its the best I saw all year.

Coldplay
I wish I could come up with some groovy Indie band to put into this category instead of such a mainstream giant, but I just couldn't. I listened to more Coldplay this year than anything else. Along with a new CD and an awesome Concert, Coldplay wins.
Book:
Blue Like Jazz
I've mentioned this one before. This book is terrific. More impressive than the story was Don Miller's writing style. I wish I could write like him. His honesty is refreshing. Read it.

never been to Los Olivos, but I always like trying new restaurants - where is the No. Scottsdale location? Happy New Year!

You had to be psyched about CRASH winning BEST PICTURE 2006. I know I was ... also my favorite movie from this last year. I think I need to go to LOS OLIVOS more often. Kacie and I have discovered EL TORITO on Scottsdale Rd., south of Indian Bend. Great atmosphere, great salsa, big plates, relatively cheap, and you can order take-out. :)
